• Why Am I Always Hungry?

Just can't seem to get full? Do you find yourself eating endless amounts of food but still crave more? Maybe because you haven't got a clue what it is you have been REALLY eating? What?! That's right, what have you been shoving into your mouth? I was in the same boat as you three years go, cruising down the river to nowhere with a burger in hand! No wait I think I had a cheesy taco in my hand! The FIRST thing I noticed when I transitioned my unhealthy diet to a healthy one was I mysteriously was satisfied and full. Crazy I know! How was an apple going to fill me up?! I would not have believed it either but then again I'm REAL living proof! LOL! Well the reason nutritious food fills you up is because its OMG NUTRITIOUS! I might not be a scientist, a dietician or even a nutritionist BUT what I am is a big girl gone thin and this is MY story. So listen closely . . . go buy Michael Pollans book Food Rules and let him explain what you should be eating and just MAYBE why your appetite is out of control! I learned these rules on my own through trial and error but, now there's this WONDERFUL book that spells it out for you. Come on can I make it any easier for you?

• Food, Inc.

Food, Inc. (2009) Documentary, Filmaker Robert Kenner
Magnolia Pictures
Starring: Michael Pollan, Eric Schlosser, Gary Hirschberg, Joe Salatin
Plot Summary Written by ComingSoon.net
View Trailer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5eKYyD14d_0

In "Food, Inc.," filmmaker Robert Kenner lifts the veil on our nation's food industry, exposing the highly mechanized underbelly that's been hidden from the American consumer with the consent of our government's regulatory agencies, USDA and FDA. Our nation's food supply is now controlled by a handful of corporations that often put profit ahead of consumer health, the livelihood of the American farmer, the safety of workers and our own environment. We have bigger-breasted chickens, the perfect pork chop, insecticide-resistant soybean seeds, even tomatoes that won't go bad, but we also have new strains of e coli--the harmful bacteria that causes illness for an estimated 73,000 Americans annually. We are riddled with widespread obesity, particularly among children, and an epidemic level of diabetes among adults.Featuring interviews with such experts as Eric Schlosser ("Fast Food Nation"), Michael Pollan ("The Omnivore's Dilemma") along with forward thinking social entrepreneurs like Stonyfield Farms' Gary Hirschberg and Polyface Farms' Joe Salatin, "Food, Inc." reveals surprising -- and often shocking truths -- about what we eat, how it's produced, who we have become as a nation and where we are going from here.

• SUPER Size Me

Super Size Me (2004) Documentary, Filmmaker Morgan Spurlock
Plot Summary Written by Sujit R. Varma
View Trailer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I1Lkyb6SU5U

Why are Americans so fat? Two words: fast food. What would happen if you ate nothing but fast food for an entire month? Filmmaker Morgan Spurlock does just that and embarks on the most perilous journey of his life. The rules? For 30 days he can't eat or drink anything that isn't on McDonald's menu; he must wolf three squares a day; he must consume everything on the menu at least once and supersize his meal if asked. Spurlock treks across the country interviewing a host of experts on fast food and an equal number of regular folk while chowing down at the Golden Arches. Spurlock's grueling drive-through diet spirals him into a physical and emotional metamorphosis that will make you think twice about picking up another Big Mac.

• Keep It Simple

With all of this talk about healthy eating habits you might feel a little overwhelmed as to where to begin. When I started down this path of living a healthy lifestyle I started with little changes in my daily routine, diet and exercise being the MOST important. My previous experience with dramatic changes in my diet led me to failure so therefore I decided to do it one small step at a time. Thus, that is why it took me a solid year to peel all the weight off BUT, that is also why I have been able to maintain the weight I am at now. Let me remind you for the millionth time, this is a lifestyle NOT a diet. Examples of simple changes I made were grabbing some baby carrots and hummus instead of eating a half a bag of chips! One of my favorite snacks is thick greek yogurt with chocolate coconut granola sprinkled in it. To keep off the mid afternoon food binge I started keeping healthy snacks in my purse such as an apple, cliff bar or bag of almonds to hold me over. The first thing you can do is PREPARE yourself WAY in advance to a possible run in with the enemy, your appetite. There is always going to be temptations in your path so you need to learn how your going to deal with this WHEN it happens. I pack my lunch or snacks with me almost everyday. Did you know that they actually make COOL lunch boxes for adults now?!?! LOL! I have a Vera Bradley lunch bag its sooo darn cute! So start getting with the program one small step at a time and next thing you know SHA'BAM your clothes are fitting a little loser then they were last week! Oh and go for a walk or something, a little exercise goes a longggggg way BABY!

• Hey Pill Popper

What the HELL are you thinking?! Really you think a magic pill is going to help you lose weight and keep it off?! HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA! Yeah okay?! It cracks me up when I see my friends popping these weight loss pills like candy! Oh and so many of them are ecstatic about losing the pounds at an unprecedented rate BUT the reality is they gain it ALL back. Why? DUH because a pill is NOT a long term solution. Just maybe these pills will give you a jump start on your weight loss goals but, once again unless you've invested the time into a long term plan then all you're doing is wasting your time and money. So let me give you a jump start, ditch the pills and start thinking about what you're going to do now and for the rest of your life. Here's a hint, start living life like a healthy happy human being. It's really just that simple, yes really :)

• Stop the MADNESS

Nothing gets me more aggravated then girls that 'claim' they can eat whatever they want and really all they are doing is starving themselves. This post may open up a can of worms but its my personal observation and opinion and truly I don't give dam what people think! Here's the deal for years I was under the assumption that most of the thin girls out there were predisposed to be thin. Hey some of them yes but the rest I will call LIARS! Let me please be the first to tell you most of these thin girls out there are full of SH*T! I'm blogging about this because I often got discouraged about trying to lose weight and thought it seemed like an impossible mission and these thin girls I knew seemed to never have a weight problem. Its kind of funny now that I have lost the unhealthy weight I was carrying around a handful of these thin girls are making claims behind my back that there is no way I eat healthy to look the way I do. Well those girls are obviously jealous that I EAT to look like this and they don't! So onto the point of all this. If you starve yourself you will royally screw your metabolism to no end and when you eat again healthy or not you will gain a ton of weight. It can take years to repair the damage you have caused to yourself not to mention the damaging effects on your body from not eating. So don't get discouraged when your around some of these thin girls who lie because the truth is you CAN lose the weight and be healthy but you've got to invest the time into an overall healthy lifestyle. Once again its not about a number its about living a healthy and fulfilling life and I can't imagine starving yourself will lead you there. SO EAT B*TCH, EAT :)

• Recipe of the Week Blog

Let me first start off by saying the only thing I was capable of cooking before I became a thin girl was a box of Mac and Cheese! I never cooked nor did I have the desire to learn but, part of this getting healthy thing is learning to cook . . . the healthy way. Now look I'll be the first person to admit I'm no celebrity chef hell, the guy at the gas station is probably a better cook than me so please feel free to adjust any of these recipes to your own liking.

Every week from this point forward I will be blogging a 'Recipe of the Week' along with actual photo's of the dish. These photos can be viewed on the Big Girl Thin Facebook fan page which I WELCOME any comments or suggestions you may have on my recipes or on my blog topics! Get ready, get set, COOK!

• Breakfast of CHAMPIONS!

People often ask me where do you get all your energy from?! For those of you that don't know me I would describe myself as a bumblebee on RedBull! I attribute this energy from two main sources, my morning half a pot of coffee and my powerhouse oatmeal! LOL! No the reality is my overall energy really comes living a healthy lifestyle as I'm sharing with you in my many blogs that's why you need to keep reading and pay attention!

As we all have heard at some point in our lives breakfast IS the most important meal of the day but many of you just plain skip it. Why? Maybe you don't have time or you're not hungry that early in the morning. Well guess what? Too bad I'm not interested in those excuses. Let me SUGGEST something to you . . . if you want to think like a champion and move like a champion then you have to eat like a champion and that means starting your day off right. Breakfast sets the pace for your metabolism and appetite the rest of the day. Now here's the important part, eating an "empty" calorie breakfast will NOT help you in any shape or form. Meaning you need to create a meal of substance. My personal favorite is my powerhouse oatmeal recipe below. There are several other options which you will find in my MUST have books. Please tell me you have at least reviewed my MUST have book list by now? My personal new favorite cookbook is Cook Yourself Thin Faster. This book has FABULOUS recipes that you can cook and prepare in minutes.

Powerhouse Oatmeal for CHAMPIONS
Ingredients
* 1/2 cup McCanns Quick Cooking Irish Oatmeal

* 1 tsp. Sliced Almonds, raw no salt

* 1 tsp. Sunflower Seeds, raw no salt no shells
* 1/2 cup Fruit, i.e. strawberries, blueberries, peach

Directions

• Sunday is FUN Day!

Whether its Sunday or Monday its important to allow yourself to indulge from time to time or for me personally once a week. Now this doesn't mean I go on a food binge and consume an entire tray of pizza in one sitting but it does mean I replace one of my meals for that day with a splurge food. As much as I preach about fruits, vegetables and whole grains I too LOVE crap food! I don't believe the mentality "I will never eat unhealthy again" works long term soooo therefore I take one day out of my week to get a little BUCK WILD! I might go to a Sunday brunch, out with my friends for Italian or hit up Taco Bell and grab a cheesy Gordida Crunch! LOL! So please do take a day for your peace of mind and indulge a little it's not going to make or break you but, depriving yourself of something you REALLY want will. :)

• The Gym Thing

Let me guess you'd rather watch paint dry then go to the gym?! Well me too if it's something your forcing upon yourself! You should never have to force yourself to do something or guess what? It probably won't last long term just like a fad diet. Hell I haven't been to the gym since Thanksgiving! Yup that's right I just didn't feel like it and you know what it's okay to not feel like doing something. My theory on gym's and exercise is mix it up and do what you love! Some days I will go for a bike ride, other days I feel like a hard core spinning class at the gym, on another day I might go for a run around my neighborhood. I never commit myself to having to do something. Exercise is a vital component in getting healthy and staying healthy and there a million ways to get your fix! One of my new years resolutions is to try HOT Yoga! I'd love to do a half marathon at some point, that would be an amazing thing to accomplish! ITS ALL ABOUT YOU not me YOU! What do you love? What do you want to accomplish? What do you want to try? I always keep my exercise regime fun and ever changing that way I don't burn out and I'm always motivated! I personally am an outdoor person and can't work out at a gym for hours on end. I go to the gym for two reasons. Reason #1 Spinning Class. Spinning burns anywhere from 500 calories in a 30 minute class to OVER 1000 calories in an hour class! DAM STRAIGHT I FREAKING LOVE spinning class! Reason #2 All the HOT guys at the gym! LOL! Other than that you will find me getting my exercise fix from other places in other ways. Remember exercise does not mean you to train like a pro athlete just GET YO A** MOVING and your body will thank you :)

• LOOK at the Label

Open your eyes! Don't fall asleep at the wheel when you're at the grocery store behind that shopping cart! You shouldn't judge a book by its cover and you certainly should NEVER EVER judge a box or a can by its appearance. There are 4 things I glance at when I read a label and I ALWAYS read the label! Calories, sodium, fiber and sugar. What about protein? Typically you are not going to get your protein from something that has a label. Yes there are protein bars and shakes but I'm personally not a big fan of those sources of protein. So onto label reading.

CALORIES:
Pretty much everything I eat that has a label is under 300 calories. I try to keep it on average around 200-250 calories. I eat 5-6 times a day equaling a daily calorie average of 1200-1500 calories plus or minus. Thus I eat breakfast, lunch, dinner and 2-3 snacks. Yes there are days when I have burned a sh*t load of calories riding horses or going to a spinning class or cleaning my apartment so obviously I will consume more calories or else I would end up looking like a bobble head celebrity with an closet eating disorder!

SODIUM:
This little bugger will nip you in the a** if you don't watch out! Foods that are boxed or canned can be LOADED with sodium. Sodium makes me puff up like a blow fish! No joke! It's very sexy looking, NOT! The FDA’s recommendation for adults safe daily sodium intake is 2,300 mg. In reality most Americans consume anywhere from 3,000-4,000 mg daily. So bottom line look for foods either labeled low in sodium or with none at all. I have found you can season your food with spices that offer just as much taste if not more and don't have the side effects that sodium has on your body. *A VERY IMPORTANT thing to note is look at the serving per container as some companies will try to pull one over on you. Two servings per container means double the sodium. Three servings per container mean triple the sodium! Yikes!

FIBER:
Meet your new BFF :) Fiber is your friend, your BEST' EST friend you will ever have next to your dog! That's right! Fiber fills you up, gets the gut working, gives you energy and a lot of other FABULOUS stuff. I can't explain all the medical terminology but Dr. Oz can and he preaches about its benefits in his books! I like fiber to be a minimum of 3-5 grams. That means the food has substance to it and its less likely to be an empty calorie food that will leave you hungry an hour later.

SUGAR:
All I want to do is ZOOM ZOOM ZOOM around this room room! YESSSSS! Sugar makes me feel GREAT for like fifteen minutes and then I'm in a comatosed state of mind and can hardly function. NOOOOOOO! So sad but true :( Sugar is like sleeping with the enemy! It's just NOT a good thing! Sugar turns to fat faster than fat turns to fat. Once again let Dr. Oz explain that one! Are you getting the hint yet? DUH! You need to go buy at least one of Dr. Oz's books! LOL! Anyway sugar needs to be under 11 grams on a label. I try to keep mine around 9 or less.

With all of that said HAPPY LABEL READING may the force of knowledge be with you!

• Blame it on the Alcohol

Chapter 1 Skinny Bitch, Give It Up! God I LOVE this book, talk about putting it all out there! The authors pretty much sum up my feelings on things you need to give up, alcohol being one them! OMG! You're thinking NO FREAKING WAY am I giving up my Vino! LOL! I'm not advising you completely take alcohol out of your life just start drinking it in moderation! I allow myself to have a drink or two or three (LOL) one night a week or on special occasions! Here's the thing . . . a large glass of wine has about 150 calories. DAM! Come on we know there is nooooo way you're going to pour a 4 oz. glass which has about 80-90 calories and FYI if you drank the entire bottle you're looking at 550-600 calories! Holy Sh*t is right! Red wine of course has numerous health benefits but if your drinking a bottle of wine in one sitting the only thing that's going to benefit is your a**! I estimate my calorie consumption daily to be around 1200-1500 calories. Now your thinking oh dear God I have to count calories . . . um kinda sorta have too. I don't get all nuts about it but I definitely have an idea of how many calories are in almost everything I eat. How do you LEARN this? First, start reading labels. A matter of fact I will blog on labels tomorrow. In the mean time I suggest you purchase one of my books from my MUST have book list, The Calorie King; Calorie, Fat & Carbohydrate Counter. The best part about this book is you will easily learn how many calories are in foods and you will completly FREAK yourself out when you relize how many calories you have been consuming!
P.S. ALCOHOL = POSSIBLE HANGOVER = CRAP EATING = FAT A** :o

• The DEVIL in Disguise

Three words and I quote from the book Skinny Bitch "Chemical Shit Storm"! Buy the book and let the authors explain why FAKE sugar is so so so bad for you! Oh and real sugar, well that isn't much better either especially in excess. Here's the thing about sugar, sugar will make you fatter than fat. You're shocked right?! So that means you need to detox yourself from sugar overall, real and fake. Now don't get me wrong some of my favorite sweet treats use sugar BUT I eat them in moderation! In my opinion your sugar options should be 'natural sweeteners' such as unrefined brown sugar, maple syrup, molasses, honey, agave nectar, barley malt and rice syrup. The latest as discussed by Dr. OZ this past week is Agave Nectar from the agave plant. FYI the agave plant is how tequila is actually made. Anyway a tiny little dash goes a long way because it is so powerfully sweet. Another choice to keep in mind is stevia which comes from the stevia plant. I am not particular about the taste as it still reminds me of fake sugar although they claim it is not. So remember SUGAR is the DEVIL and don't forget that!

• Inspired to Write

Below is a copy of the email that inspired me to start this blog and share my story. Thank you Lori for asking me to share with you and others my journey from a big girl to a thin girl. -xoxo meg

Well that is so interesting Lori you mention that I might be good at motivating people. My friends have often mentioned that I always seem to offer that extra bit of confidence they need to do something. On the subject of my weight loss secret …here we go, jump in my car (Sally the Saab I call her) and make sure you fasten your seatbelt because that is my favorite question to answer these days! I think that it is about time reality show producers are taking a look at an epidemic in America, obesity. Well first things first, there is NO such thing as a diet if you want to lose weight and keep it off. People ask me all the time “WOW! You look great! What did you do? What diet are you on?” My response is I don’t diet and I’m not on a diet. DIETS are for LOSERS and I LOVE to WIN!

The first question you need to ask yourself next time you eat, Would your mom have let you eat that if you were a kid still growing? Hmmmm probably not, maybe so. I grew up eating what my mom thought was a healthy diet until I stopped growing and then the snow storm hit. We stocked up on TV dinners, chips, lunch meats packed w/salt (FYI), and tons of candy and hostess for your (you know what) most’ess!! Well thanks to somewhat decent genes and I rode horses day in and day out since I was 5 years old it didn’t effect me until . . . .I stopped riding 24/7 and ate fast food 3 times a day! OUCH is right! Ok let me ask you, when you go to the mall where do you park? Hmm I bet you drive around for ten minutes looking for that perfect space. Well next time the rule is whatever row you pull down you park in the last space, oh temptation even if there's an open one closer NOPE! Your gonna take that last space! And ohhh then your in the mall and you jump on the escalator but no one is in front of you…what do you do? Don’t just stand there, this isn't The Jetsons, get moving start walking those stairs! It is all the little steps that add up. Exercise is a key component in weight loss. You don’t need to be the next weightlifter extraordinaire or marathon runner or even consume your life in a gym just get “yo a** moving girl!” To get the initial weight off I joined my local gym for one main reason…. all the hot guys! No just kidding! Spinning Class! You know that stationary bike in the secluded room where no one can see you if you move you bike into a corner! Oh Yah! I learned through gym friends that spinning class is the ONLY piece of equipment that can burn the MOST calories in the shortest time! Let everyone wait in line for the elliptical machine (the most favorite piece of equipment for some idiotic reason) Nope just go spin spin spin! And its fun! Ok Food! Oh what to eat! So easy its scary! Really people write these books make tons of money but the answer is in FRONT of you! Fruits, Vegetables, Whole wheat bread remember the food pyramid, it was a big deal in the early 80's??? Uh yes my dear it was created for a reason! Portion control RULE 1, nothing bigger then the size of your fist, NOTHING! Your dinner should fit on a small plate a little bigger than a desert plate! Go out to your patio and pretend your in that movie My Big Fat Greek Wedding and proclaim "OPAH' and smash all your large dinner plates!" LOL! Ok maybe the hubby might think you lost your marbles, maybe not! Buy this book The Doctors Book of Food Remedies by Selene Yeager and the editors of Prevention Magazine. Learn what food can do for you literally…ok bake potato vs. sweet potato? Don’t ever eat a bake potato again they do jack diddly do dah! Sweet potatoes because of their bright color are packed full of antioxidants! And you must eat the skins off all fruits and veggies for them to fill you up w the good stuff god intended! You will no longer be hungry when your body is finally full of all the nutrients and vitamins it needs. If I eat a slice of pizza which I still do on occasion I will be hungry an hour later…hmm that’s because there is nothing nutritious about pizza all though its sooooooooooo good! For breakfast my favorite recipe in the WORLD! Will keep you full for hours! Oatmeal the real kind (can be quick cooking but plain old fashioned oatmeal). Ok you can do this on the stove or you have a busy schedule the night before without cooking it. Mix ½ cup of oat meal, 1 cup water or skim milk if you prefer, add RAW no salt added a pinch (basically a tablespoon or two) of sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds, slivered almonds, and flax seed.(The seeds are all hard to find but every grocery store has them and make sure no salt no nothing raw not roasted either). For the sweet side add your favorite fruit cut up a peach, strawberries, blueberries (frozen if not in season) or what ever …hell a mango if you want! Fresh is the best option as when things are frozen or packed in cans or even cooked they lose the nutritional content and then you will get hungry so always try to stick with fresh! Add the fruit in the end if your cooking because heat removes nutritional content as well. If you make the night before just put in a glass bowl with a sealed lid, pop in microwave for 30 secs. And WAH’LA breakfast or you can eat cold as I have! When you steam vegetables the same thing goes. Try to think of it as making them warm not cooking them! Get hooked on good things! For lunch I eat a peanut butter sandwich on whole wheat bread. Bread is tricky because most all of it is over processed. Look at sodium. I go to whole foods because their bread amazingly enough has the lowest content out of ALL breads on the market and for the same price! Bread needs to have substance of grains not low calorie that will leave you feeling hungry. Peanut butter surprises people but, it fills you up for a long time. Have an apple or some other fruit in the day. I LOVE the granola whole foods bakes in the actual store it fills me up no lie for hours on end. High in calories BUT everything in it is good for you that’s why you don’t gain weight you LOSE weight! And once again portion control! I like the brand Kashi they have some great things and it’s sold everywhere! Now my dear you must be careful with the fiber (as eating healthy means high fiber contents) as your body might have to adjust slowly or you will transform into a hot air balloon literally (I did and boy am I glad I didn’t have a boyfriend! LOL)! I enjoy the magazine womans health as I always find some interesting recipes in there. Its not a diet just a way of life. Other foods I love, pineapple absorbs fat! Oh yah! So if you must have well that slice of pizza eat a little of that after and you avoided lots of yucky fat calories! Spinach vs. lettuce, lettuce does zilch, nada, nothing! Just buy that book and understand what good foods do for you and I bet you will see food differently and see yourself change! Buy a scale, I threw mine out when I started to gain weight well DUH! If I kept the scale maybe I could have seen I was gaining weight at an unprecedented rate! Only weigh yourself once a day in the morning. Don’t get all psycho about the weigh in number it fluctuates always. But do check out how your clothes are fitting that’s what matters the most!

Well I hoped I inspired you because its not about a number its about eating healthy and literally feeling good about yourself inside and out, in my mind it just so happens when you make healthy choices you just so happen to lose weight! Some people may lose a ton of weight like I did or others may lose a little but the bottom line is…your body will be healthy so that you live a lot longer and enjoy what life has to offer and I can tell you being heavy took away so many things for me during that period. But it really gave me a different perspective about life and the unfortunate way people can act when you are over weight and sometimes it takes a little negativity to put alot of positivity back into your life :)
